History

Stratonikeia Ancient City is located within the boundaries of Eskihisar Village on the Yatağan-Milas road, 6-7 km west of the Yatağan District of Muğla. The city was founded in the 3rd century BC when the wife of the Syrian King I. Seleucus, Stratonike, was given to her stepson Antiochus. Antiochus built this city in the name of his stepmother and later wife, Stratonike. According to Strabo's descriptions, Stratonikeia Ancient City was adorned with splendid structures during that period.

Excavations and Artifacts

Through the excavations, many valuable artifacts and findings have been unearthed in Stratonikeia Ancient City. From the coins found during the excavations, it is known that Stratonikeia coins were minted starting from 167 BC and continued until the Gallienus period. The acropolis of the city is located on the top of a mountain in the south and is surrounded by walls. On the northern slope, there are the remains of a small temple and a large theater.

How to Get There

To reach Stratonikeia Ancient City, you need to depart from Muğla city center and arrive at the Yatağan District. After reaching Eskihisar Village on the Yatağan-Milas road, you can walk a short distance to reach the city.
