The History and Origins of the Village

Sirince Village is a village located 8 kilometers away from the center of Selcuk district in Izmir. There are various legends about the origins of the village. It is said that the original name of the village was Kirkince, which was given in reference to forty people who took refuge in the mountains during a legendary period. The village, called Kirkice or Kirkince in Rum pronunciation, was officially renamed Sirince during the Republican era. In the 19th century, it was known as a renowned Greek town with 1800 houses, mainly famous for its fig production. After the population exchange between Turkey and Greece in 1923, the Greeks left the village and it was settled by new residents, namely immigrants.
