Historical and Architectural Features

Mardin Great Mosque is one of the architectural examples from the Artuklu Period and has become a symbol of Mardin. Sources provide different information about the history of the structure. The inscription on the square base of the only remaining minaret today indicates the construction date of the mosque as 1176. However, the current minaret was added later and was built in 1888/1889. There are claims that the mosque was converted from a church during its construction, but there is no definite evidence, although it is likely that there was an old church nearby. The Great Mosque reflects the basic features of 12th-century Artuklu Period architecture. It is an important example of the mosque plan and form that developed with a dome in front of the mihrab which was widespread, especially in the early period in the southeast. The material of the structure is smooth-cut stone, and its dome is made using the technique of external fluting. This technique was first used in the Mardin Great Mosque and later became widespread in other structures in Mardin.
