About Justinianus Bridge

Built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinianus (527-565) in the years 558-560 AD, this stone bridge has a total of 12 arches and is 365 meters long and 9.85 meters wide. At the western end of the bridge, there are remnants of a gateway, a structure with an apse at the eastern end, and vaulted structure remains related to the bridge. Although initially named Pontogephyra, the bridge later took the name Pentegephyra.

Justinianus Bridge and UNESCO

Justinianus Bridge was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Temporary List in 2018. This allowed the bridge to be protected and gain international recognition due to its cultural and historical significance.

Location of Justinianus Bridge

Justinianus Bridge is located on the Çark Creek (Melas River), which drains the waters of Lake Sapanca into the Sakarya River. The bridge is located in the Adapazarı district, which is part of the Sakarya province in Turkey.

To reach the bridge, you first need to reach the Adapazarı district. You can come to Adapazarı by bus or train. Then, you can complete your journey to the bridge by using public transportation or taking a taxi from the district.
