About Izmir Clock Tower

Izmir Clock Tower is one of the iconic structures of Izmir. It was built in 1901 as part of the celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the ascension to the throne of Sultan Abdulhamid II. The clock tower, commissioned by Izmir Governor Kıbrıslı Kâmil Pasha, his son Navy Rear Admiral Said Pasha, and Mayor Eşref Pasha, is located in the Konak district, across from the Governor's building. The tower, which is 25 meters tall, four stories high, and octagonal in plan, reflects the influence of Ottoman-era architecture.

Features of Izmir Clock Tower

Izmir Clock Tower draws attention with its North African-inspired architectural elements. The horseshoe arches and column capitals used in the tower resemble those in structures in North Africa and Andalusia. The structure, designed in an orientalist style, is filled on all sides without any gaps. The clock itself was a gift from German Emperor Wilhelm II. Designed by Izmir architect Raymond Charles Pere, the clock tower has become one of Izmir's symbols, attracting the attention of tourists.
