Amasya Castle is located on Harşena Mountain, which covers the north of the city center of Amasya. It is also known as Harşena Castle. The castle is located 300 meters above the Yeşilırmak River and 700 meters above sea level.

History and Significance

Amasya Castle has changed hands many times throughout history and has been subjected to various attacks. During the reigns of the Persians, Romans, Pontus and Byzantines, the castle witnessed many wars and was rebuilt each time. With the conquest of Amasya by the Turks in 1075, the castle underwent a significant restoration. Losing its military importance since the 18th century, the castle now welcomes visitors as a historical and touristic site.

Architectural Structure of Amasya Castle

The highest point of Amasya Castle is built with cut stones, and the walls are made of rubble stones. The structures within the castle include a palace, mosque, church, dungeons, and water reservoirs. These structures were used as indicators of military activities in the castle in the past.

Amasya Castle is located approximately 4 kilometers away from the city center of Amasya. You can easily reach the castle by public transportation such as taxis or minibuses from the city center. You can also reach the castle with your private vehicle and use the surrounding parking areas.
